President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office in May 2023 to a newly established welfare fund aimed at supporting members of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families.
The President made this known in a personal statement issued on Sunday to mark his 74th birthday.
According to him, the fund will cater to serving personnel, those injured in the line of duty, soldiers who have lost limbs, as well as the families of fallen heroes.
\u201cOn my 74th birthday, I celebrate the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. I have directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a special account dedicated to those who serve, those wounded in action, and the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d the President stated.
He added that, as a personal commitment, all his salaries since assuming office would be paid into the fund as seed capital, regardless of existing welfare and insurance schemes for military personnel.
\u201cThis fund will directly support those who have suffered injuries, as well as the widows, widowers, and children of those who gave their lives in service to our country,\u201d he said.
President Tinubu also called on governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative, stressing that caring for military personnel and their families is a collective national responsibility.
\u201cWe must never forget those who stand in harm\u2019s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices made by their families. This is not charity\u2014it is a duty, and we must fulfil it,\u201d he added.
Earlier, on December 2, 2025, the President launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem and appeal fund at the State House, Abuja, as part of activities leading up to the January 15 commemoration.
At the event, he donated \u20a6200 million towards the \u20a6320 million raised, unveiled the \u201cThank a Soldier\u201d digital platform, and announced a Ministry of Defence initiative to deploy retired military personnel to help secure ungoverned areas.
The President opted for a low-key celebration of his birthday, citing the prevailing national mood and ongoing economic reforms, although he has continued to receive goodwill messages from leaders across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
