The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT has handed over two suspected stowaways rescued from a merchant vessel, MV Seapan Lahore, to the Nigeria Immigration Service in Lagos. The suspects were formally transferred to officials of the Lagos Ports and Marine Command in Apapa for further investigation and necessary action.
According to reports, the individuals were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, 19 March 2026, concealed in the rudder compartment of the vessel during routine security checks by naval personnel. The ship was at the Lagos Fairway Buoy when the discovery was made. The suspects were safely extracted and taken to the naval base for preliminary questioning.
Initial investigations identified the suspects as Abdullahi Yakubu, aged 36, and Omoniyi Afotona, aged 25. Authorities revealed that Yakubu is a repeat offender. Both men are believed to have gained unauthorized access to the vessel at Apapa Port before it departed.
The Navy used the incident to warn against illegal migration, emphasizing that stowing away on ships is both dangerous and unlawful. It urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people on the risks involved and to encourage those seeking opportunities abroad to pursue legal means of travel.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria\u2019s maritime domain. It stated that under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Navy will continue to maintain a professional and motivated force capable of protecting national maritime interests and supporting broader security operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
