The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly shouting \u201cno water, no light\u201d during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago\u2019s visit to the Emir of Suleja following Eid-el-Fitr prayers.
Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was apprehended for attempting to disrupt official activities during the governor\u2019s Sallah visit. He explained that Abdullahi was taken into custody on March 20, 2026, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna over allegations of suspected thuggery and public disturbance. He, however, noted that the suspect has since been granted bail while investigations continue.
The suspect\u2019s brother, Haruna Abdullahi, also confirmed his release, stating that he regained his freedom on Tuesday evening after spending five days in detention.
Hamisu, an electrician and father of four who lives in Unguwan Bayi, Suleja, was reportedly arrested at the emir\u2019s palace shortly after he shouted the phrase during the governor\u2019s visit. There were unverified claims that the arrest was carried out on the governor\u2019s directive, although this has not been independently confirmed.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Bologi Ibrahim, said he was not aware of the incident. Meanwhile, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution Governor Bago against actions that could undermine press freedom in the state.
