The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has emphasised the crucial role of collective responsibility and community engagement in strengthening Nigeria\u2019s national security. Speaking through Major General Bala Isandu (Rtd) at the Security Summit and Recognition Awards, the Minister highlighted the need for active citizen participation, timely intelligence sharing, and professional security institutions to build a safer nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
General Musa noted that Nigeria faces a wide range of security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, organised crime, cyber threats, and communal conflicts. He stressed that security is no longer the sole responsibility of the military or law enforcement agencies, but a shared national duty requiring coordinated action from citizens and institutions alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community engagement, he said, is critical for sustainable security, as local residents are often the first to notice unusual or suspicious activities. Trust between security agencies and communities enhances the flow of information, improves cooperation, and ensures more effective interventions. \u201cBuilding this trust requires professionalism, respect for human rights, transparency, and continuous dialogue,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister also underscored the importance of grassroots intelligence sharing as a force multiplier in preventing crime and dismantling criminal networks. He encouraged Nigerians to see information sharing as both a civic responsibility and an act of patriotism, warning that silence empowers criminals and undermines national safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflecting on his military career, General Musa recounted his commissioning into the Nigerian Army in 1991 and his rise to Chief of Defence Staff in 2023. He highlighted that professionalism, discipline, and integrity have guided his leadership and continue to shape his approach as Minister of Defence, ensuring that the Armed Forces and other security agencies remain apolitical and dedicated to defending Nigeria\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Concluding his remarks, General Musa called on all Nigerians to embrace active citizenship, cooperation, and vigilance.
