The seminar, themed <strong>\u201cNigeria\u2019s Legal System and the Fire Service: Roles and Responsibilities,\u201d<\/strong> brought together senior officers, legal experts, facilitators, and personnel for an insightful and impactful capacity-building session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Declaring the seminar open, the Assistant Controller General (ACG) in charge of the Inspectorate, Investigation &amp; Enforcement (IIE) Department emphasized that the forum goes beyond routine departmental activity. He described it as a strategic initiative designed to reinforce lawful operations, deepen procedural integrity, and strengthen the accountability expected of officers whose duties directly impact public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that the responsibilities of the Federal Fire Service continue to expand nationwide\u2014from inspections and investigations to enforcement and emergency response\u2014and officers must remain guided by the legal frameworks that define their powers and limitations. With increasing legal scrutiny on fire safety operations, particularly regarding enforcement and evidence-handling, the seminar offers a timely opportunity to enhance officers\u2019 understanding of relevant laws and regulatory instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants received training on key thematic areas, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overview of Nigeria\u2019s legal system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sources of Nigerian law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Powers and limitations under the Federal Fire Service Act<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practical legal challenges commonly encountered by firefighters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants were drawn from the Inspectorate, Investigation and Enforcement (IIE) Unit; the Planning, Evaluation and Development (PED) Unit; and the Public Relations Unit. The Service announced plans to extend the training nationwide to ensure that all departments benefit from improved legal knowledge and strengthened operational capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaffirming the critical role of the IIE Department in national fire safety compliance, the ACG stressed the importance of aligning operations with the Fire Service Act, the National Fire Safety Code, the National Building Code, and other regulatory frameworks guiding fire safety and emergency management. He urged officers to apply legal knowledge diligently to prevent operational errors that could result in litigation, public misunderstanding, or reputational risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further encouraged participants to uphold professionalism, transparency, and strict adherence to statutory procedures as the Service continues to strengthen its role as Nigeria\u2019s lead agency in fire prevention, safety regulation, and enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ACG commended the Legal Department for organizing the seminar and reaffirmed the IIE Department\u2019s commitment to continuous learning and capacity development.
