Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and human rights activist, has announced plans to take legal action against the Nigeria Police Force, citing \u201cinhumane treatment\u201d during his recent detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement released Saturday, Sowore\u2019s lawyer, Tope Temokun, accused police officers of fracturing his client\u2019s arm during a violent attempt to forcibly transfer him from one cell to another at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The legal team dismissed the police\u2019s official claim that Sowore arrived at their facility already bandaged, labeling it \u201cfalse, self-indicting, and illogical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Temokun further demanded that the police publish an inventory of all items seized from Sowore at the time of his arrest to substantiate their account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the statement, Sowore was denied access to his personal medical team and was instead subjected to treatment by an unqualified first-aider, without any X-rays or proper medical diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lawyers explained that Sowore refused to be examined by police medical personnel to avoid any \u201cmanipulation of evidence\u201d by those suspected of causing the injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The legal team also condemned the police for dismissing other allegations, including the alleged theft of Sowore\u2019s Ray-Ban AI glasses by an officer, while swiftly denying claims of assault in public statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Temokun argued that Sowore\u2019s decision not to write a statement\u2014cited by police as justification for his detention\u2014is protected under his constitutional rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing Section 35(2) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 60(1) of the Police Act 2020, the legal team emphasized Sowore\u2019s rights during custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe fact remains clear: Omoyele Sowore\u2019s arm was broken while in police custody, under their control. We will pursue all appropriate legal remedies, including filing petitions with the Nigeria Police Council and the Police Service Commission,\u201d Temokun declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
