Illegal mining has not only caused severe environm<\/strong>ental damage and revenue losses <\/strong>estimate<\/strong>d at around $9 billion annually; <\/strong>but has also fueled insecurity, corruption, and local conflicts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The establishment of the Special Mining Marshals (MM)<\/strong> in 2023 <\/strong>through a collaboration between the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the Mini<\/strong>stry of Interior, and the NSCDC <\/strong>was a timely and strategic decision to reverse these trends by securing mining zones, enforcing regulations, and dismantling illegal operations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At the heart of that mission stands John Onoja Attah, an officer known for his fierce integrity, strategic a<\/strong>cumen, and operational command.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At a recent public event, Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, publicly commended ACC Attah\u2019s incorruptibility and leadership. This funding includes new operational vehicles, surveillance drones, advanced communications systems, and improved welfare provisions for operatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the recent approval by the Federal Executive Council<\/strong> for satellite-based mineral surveillance marks a historic milestone. For the first time, Nigeria\u2019s mineral-rich regions will benefit from both aerial and ground-level monitoring, significantly enhancing national oversight and accountability in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond raids and arrests, Attah\u2019s strategy includes non-kinetic interventions. He has consistently advocated for constructive engagement with artisanal miners, encouraging them to form cooperatives and operate within the bounds of the law.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Attah has also developed a strategic framework that prioritizes education, registration, and formalization<\/strong>, with the aim of building a structured and inclusive mining economy.
