The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has outlined President Bola Tinubu\u2019s comprehensive roadmap for restoring peace and security in Benue State and the wider North Central region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement issued on Thursday, Akume disclosed that the Federal Government is rolling out a multi-layered security strategy aimed at ending the recurring violence that has plagued the region for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasised that President Tinubu\u2019s recent visit to Benue was not symbolic, but a deliberate move aligned with his administration\u2019s Renewed Hope Agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Renewed Hope Agenda priorities the protection of lives above all else\u201d, Akume stated, quoting the President\u2019s position. \u201cThe President\u2019s directive is unambiguous: security agencies must apprehend perpetrators and prevent recurrence. This is not just rhetoric, we are mobilising personnel, technology, and community intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While acknowledging the immense pressure on Nigeria\u2019s security forces, the SGF praised their commitment, adding that the Federal Government is addressing logistical gaps and encouraging better inter-agency collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur security forces are overstretched, yet their dedication is unwavering. We are augmenting their efforts with improved logistics and inter-agency coordination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senator Akume also stressed that achieving lasting peace will require strong cooperation between federal and state governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He called on the Benue State Government to take the lead in convening local stakeholders, including traditional rulers, opposition leaders, and civil society groups, to foster inclusive dialogue and community-based peacebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhile the FG leads security operations, the Benue State government must galvanize local leaders. The governor must convene stakeholders, traditional institutions, NGOs, and opposition figures to foster dialogue,\u201d Akume stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the humanitarian front, he expressed concern over the displacement of over 50,000 people, urging immediate intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re working with NEMA and NGOs to scale up aid. These people need food, shelter, and dignity,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond security measures, Akume outlined the government\u2019s broader socio-economic plans to address the root causes of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He revealed that agricultural initiatives and youth employment schemes are being fast-tracked to reduce poverty and prevent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMilitary action alone is not enough. We are fast-tracking agricultural projects and youth employment schemes to curb crime triggers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
