The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, has joined the Federal and State Governments, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and other security agencies in commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Sokoto State.
The event, which took place on Wednesday, 15 January 2026, at the Maigero Theatre in Sokoto, was attended by the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant CC, EA Ajayi, alongside other security chiefs and top government officials. The ceremony commenced at about 10:00 a.m. and was organised to honour fallen Nigerian heroes who paid the supreme price in the defence of the nation.
The wreath-laying ceremony was led by the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, in honour of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars and in subsequent military operations. Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on 15 January to remember the sacrifices of gallant servicemen and women who fought to preserve the unity, peace, and sovereignty of Nigeria.
The ceremony also served as a moment of reflection on the immense sacrifices made by both fallen and living heroes, including those who suffered injuries, displacement, and other hardships as a result of war in service to the country. It highlighted the enduring legacy of courage, patriotism, and selflessness exhibited by members of the Armed Forces.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, the Chief Judge of the state, the Grand Khadi, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, the Commissioner of Police, heads of other security agencies, and representatives of the Nigeria Legion, among others.
Highlights of the 2026 commemoration included the inspection of the guard of honour by the Executive Governor, the laying of wreaths, a 21-gun salute, and the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace and unity. The solemn activities underscored the nation’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by its Armed Forces.
The NSCDC, Sokoto State Command, reaffirmed its solidarity with the Nigerian Armed Forces and the families of fallen heroes, while reiterating its commitment to the protection of critical national assets, public safety, and the maintenance of peace and security across Sokoto State.
